Kizakura — One Minute of Stillness
A Fushimi brewery beloved for its kappa mascot
0:00−:−−
Bring children to Kappa Country. Kappa folklore is part of the visit.
Soul of the Kura
Most breweries take themselves seriously.
Kizakura took kappa instead.

The mischievous river-spirits of Japanese folklore
became the brewery's mascots in the 1955 TV ads —
and made Kizakura the friendliest household name in sake.

The bottle is approachable.
The brewery complex is family-friendly.
Sake without ceremony — and excellent at that.
Characteristics
Founded 1925 by the Matsumoto family in Fushimi.
Famous nationally for the kappa mascot ad campaigns of 1955 onward.
Operates the Kizakura Kappa Country complex —
a brewery shop, kappa folklore museum, sake & craft beer tasting hall,
and full restaurant on the original brewery grounds.
Easy, friendly, generous Fushimi sake.
Reasons to Visit
Tasting Etiquette
  1. Try a paired sake & craft beer flight.
Kizakura is the rare kura that does both well.
  2. Order the on-site restaurant lunch.
Kappa Country's restaurant pairs every dish to a brewery bottle.
  3. Buy a cute kappa-decorated bottle as gift.
The mascots make Kizakura the friendliest souvenir from Kyoto.
  4. Walk Fushimi after.
The historical canal walk passes a half-dozen kura.
  5. Visit Fushimi Inari before sunset.
The brewery is en route from the shrine to Chushojima Station.

Kamigamo and Shimogamo are Yamashiro's first-rank shrines — UNESCO World Heritage.
Fushimi Inari, with its 10,000 vermilion torii, sits five minutes north of the brewery —
kami of harvest, business, and abundance.
Pair the visit either way; both belong to the kura's spiritual neighbourhood.
