Sawanoi — One Minute of Stillness
A working sake brewery within Tokyo prefecture
0:00−:−−
Drink beside the Tama River. The brewery garden faces it.
Soul of the Kura
Most travellers think of Tokyo as a single city.
But the prefecture stretches west into mountains —
limestone valleys, cedar forests, the Tama River.

In one of those valleys, a brewery has stood since 1702.
It is older than the modern city by 150 years.

The water still rises, cold, from limestone caves
directly beneath the kura.
Characteristics
Founded 1702 in Sawai, in the mountainous western edge of Tokyo prefecture.
The Ozawa family has brewed here for fourteen generations.
Brewed with limestone-filtered Okutama spring water,
which rises from the brewery's own cave.
Dry, mineral, quietly elegant —
the working sake brewery closest to central Tokyo.
Reasons to Visit
Tasting Etiquette
  1. Visit on a weekday if possible.
Weekends draw Tokyo crowds; weekdays leave the riverside to you.
  2. Reserve a tofu lunch in advance.
Mamagotoya fills weeks ahead, especially spring and autumn.
  3. Try the brewery's own spring water.
Free at the cave entrance — taste it before tasting the sake.
  4. Buy a small glass cup as souvenir.
The brewery's hand-pressed glassware is sold only here.
  5. Carry a bottle back on the train.
A perfect ride: river, sake, Shinjuku.
