Tenzan

— The Mountain Spring of Saga —
Audio Guide
Tenzan — One Minute of Stillness
A gentle Saga sake that follows the country water
0:00−:−−
Cool to 12°C. Pair with Saga's gentle local food.
Soul of the Kura
Saga is a quiet province.
White-walled warehouses, indigo-dyed cloth,
rice fields stretching to the Ariake Sea.

Tenzan has brewed in the village of Iwakura, Ogi,
since 1875 — beside the clear spring water
that descends from Mt. Tenzan.

The sake is exactly that water:
soft, gentle, almost weightless.
The everyday Saga family table.
Characteristics
Founded 1875 by the Shichida family in Ogi, Saga.
Brewed with mountain spring water from the Tenzan range,
which the family preserves and bottles separately as drinking water.
Soft, gentle, faintly sweet — the everyday drink of the Saga countryside,
distinct from the more famous Nabeshima but equally beloved.
The brewery's modern Shichida label has won repeated IWC trophies.
Reasons to Visit
Tasting Etiquette
  1. Try the source water first.
The brewery sells the spring as drinking water — start there.
  2. Cool to 12°C, in a small glass.
Tenzan's softness rewards a gentle pour.
  3. Pair with delicate seafood.
Ariake oysters, Yobuko squid sashimi — all flatter the bottle.
  4. Try the Shichida label as comparison.
The brewery's modern flagship — a more polished sister.
  5. Walk Iwakura village after.
Old white-walled storehouses, quiet rice paths.

Yodohime Jinja

與 止 日 女 神 社

The first-rank shrine of ancient Hizen,
enshrining Yodohime — kami of pure water.
A serene riverside sanctuary on the banks of the Kase,
thirty minutes south of the brewery.
The water flows from Tenzan-zan down into Saga's rice fields —
and into the bottle.
