Umenishiki

— The Plum Brocade of Iyo —
Audio Guide
Umenishiki — One Minute of Stillness
A century and a half of award-winning craft on Shikoku's north coast
0:00−:−−
Drink across from the Inland Sea if you can — the salt air completes the bottle.
Soul of the Kura
Iyo — the old name for Ehime —
sits between the Inland Sea and the rugged spine of Shikoku.
A province of pilgrims, sailors, mandarin orchards, and warriors.

Umenishiki has brewed here since 1872,
drawing on hard mountain water from the Hojigatake range.
Refined, balanced, generous —
the brewery that has won more All-Japan New Sake gold
than almost any other on Shikoku.
Characteristics
Founded 1872 in Shikokuchūō, Ehime — Japan's papermaking capital,
facing the Seto Inland Sea.
Brewed with mountain water from Mt. Hojigatake.
Repeatedly awarded gold at the All-Japan New Sake Awards;
refined, balanced, generous — built for fish from both
the Inland Sea and the Pacific.
Operates a quietly popular sake-themed restaurant on-site.
Reasons to Visit
Tasting Etiquette
  1. Try the daiginjo cool, the junmai warm.
Umenishiki's range covers both ends of temperature beautifully.
  2. Pair with white-fleshed fish.
Tai (sea bream) and hirame (flatfish) flatter the brewery best.
  3. Reserve the on-site restaurant in advance.
Tables fill weeks ahead, especially weekends.
  4. Take home a bottle from the brewery shop.
Limited reserve labels exist nowhere else.
  5. Visit Oyamazumi Jinja first if traveling north.
Pilgrimage in the morning; tasting in the afternoon.

★ Kami of Warriors

Oyamazumi Jinja

大 山 祇 神 社

The first-rank shrine of ancient Iyo, on Omishima Island in the Inland Sea.
Enshrines Ōyamazumi-no-Kami, kami of mountains, the sea, and warriors.
Its treasure hall holds 80% of Japan's surviving National Treasure armour and swords —
offerings from samurai across history seeking the kami's protection.
Cross by Shimanami Kaido bridge, then return for a bottle at sundown.
